A weekend of quiet luxury in a hidden colonial home

When you think of Cartagena, you imagine colorful streets, colonial walls, and the vibrant energy of the Caribbean. But behind some of those beautiful facades, you can find hidden places where the true magic of the city comes alive. I was fortunate enough to spend a magical weekend at one of Cartagena’s most charming private homes, experiencing a different side of the city — one of peace, beauty, and quiet luxury.

A warm welcome

I arrived on a warm Friday afternoon, where I was welcomed with a refreshing glass of cold lulo juice — the perfect welcome after a few hours of travel. The entrance led through a lovely hallway, and as soon as I stepped inside, I could feel the calm atmosphere of the house. Soft lighting, the sound of the water in the courtyard, and beautiful tropical plants all set the tone for a truly special weekend.

Located in the heart of San Diego, one of Cartagena’s most charming neighborhoods, the house is just steps away from great restaurants, boutique shops, Plaza San Diego, and La Serrezuela — and still only about 15 minutes from the airport.

An architectural love story

Built in the 17th century, the house is an authentic colonial masterpiece. Owned by a family of Italian and Greek descent who fell in love with Colombia decades ago, the home has been lovingly restored by the next generation with deep respect for its original soul — while adding modern comfort, elegant details and understated luxury.

Each of the four bedrooms features a king-size bed and its own en-suite marble bathroom, each with a unique color palette and design. One of the rooms even offers an upper loft with an additional single bed. The master suite, accessed privately from behind the pool, is located on the second floor and features a private terrace overlooking the courtyard — a perfect spot for morning coffee or a relaxed afternoon.

Spaces full of soul

The interiors blend together textures of rustic wood, smooth stone, rich fabrics, and artisanal decor from Colombia and around the world. Living spaces are filled with natural light thanks to strategic windows and open courtyards.

There’s a cozy sitting room before reaching the pool, perfect for relaxed conversations. And beyond it, a beautiful, fully air-conditioned main living room, home to a grand piano and a legendary table where Gabriel García Márquez wrote parts of Love in the Time of Cholera. The atmosphere throughout the house is enchanting — colorful cushions, carefully selected books, and artistic details make every corner feel warm, lived-in, and authentic.

Daily rhythms of joy

My days followed a simple but luxurious rhythm: fresh tropical breakfasts served at the charming kitchen’s long wooden table, morning yoga by the pool with mats provided, and refreshing dips under the midday sun. The pool area, surrounded by lush greenery, features misting systems to cool the air, and a stylish outdoor bar with high stools for relaxed afternoon snacks or cocktails.

I connected to a JBL speaker and filled the air with French Summer Vibes playlists while enjoying my favorite books by the pool. Every detail — from the fragrance of fresh flowers to the perfectly regulated air conditioning and cozy bathrobes — created an atmosphere of pure relaxation and joy. One afternoon, I took some time for myself — enjoying a mini spa session with skincare rituals and relaxing in the peaceful comfort of my beautiful room.

Evenings unfolded in the most relaxed way: after a refreshing swim, a calming shower in a marble bathroom, and a delightful dinner exploring Cartagena’s lively center — from Italian and Mediterranean cuisine to local flavors and fresh seafood — I returned to the quiet elegance of the house for peaceful nights of restorative sleep.

A flawless service experience

The staff truly made the stay even more special: warm, discreet, attentive, and dedicated. Whether preparing personalized meals — from delicious tropical breakfasts to Mediterranean-inspired dishes — or maintaining the house in impeccable condition, they delivered a level of service that could rival any five-star hotel, but with the added warmth and authenticity of a private home.

A different way to experience Cartagena

This stay offered a new perspective on Cartagena — a city full of vibrant energy, but also places of deep calm and beauty. A place where you can savor the city’s best, and yet return to your private sanctuary, surrounded by soulful details and an atmosphere of pure serenity.

It’s not just a place to stay — it’s a way to experience Cartagena differently, to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the true spirit of the city.
