A brief history about Playa del Carmen

Its history goes back to a time long before the Spaniards set foot in Mesoamerica. Playa del Carmen existed as Xaman Há during pre-Colombian times, a small Mayan fishing village. It is believed to be one of the first places the Spaniards caught sight of during their explorations of the Mesoamerican coast, as it had a privileged location opposite the island of Cozumel. Xaman Há was an important port for shipping at the time, its inhabitants were mainly engaged in fishing and agricultural activities.
