Rock in Rio is Brazil's biggest music festival and one of the most famous in the world. Since 1985 it has drawn hundreds of thousands of music lovers to Rio de Janeiro across a week of stadium-scale shows, turning the city into a global stage.
An event of this size puts extraordinary pressure on Rio's hospitality. During Rock in Rio, hotels fill, prices climb and the finest private rentals are reserved months in advance — which is why securing your accommodation early matters more here than almost anywhere.
If you're planning to attend Rock in Rio 2026, here's everything you need to know — from the lineup and dates to where to stay and how to make the most of Rio between shows.
What is Rock in Rio?
Founded in 1985 by Brazilian entrepreneur Roberto Medina, Rock in Rio was an instant landmark: its first edition welcomed acts such as Queen, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Rod Stewart, James Taylor and George Benson before crowds that ran into the hundreds of thousands.
After a celebrated return in 1991, the festival grew into a global franchise, expanding to Lisbon (2004), Madrid (2008) and Las Vegas (2015), while its Rio home became a biennial event.
Today, Rock in Rio is a multi-day, multi-stage spectacle — part music festival, part theme park — that regularly ranks among the largest and most influential festivals on earth.
Rock in Rio 2026 dates
Rock in Rio 2026 runs across seven nights over two weekends: 4, 5, 6 and 7 September, then 11, 12 and 13 September 2026. Unusually, the festival includes Monday 7 September — Brazil's Independence Day holiday — a night headlined by Elton John alongside Gilberto Gil. Gates open in the early afternoon, with the headline acts taking the main stage (Palco Mundo) after dark.

Why Rock in Rio is much more than a music festival
Rock in Rio unfolds inside the purpose-built Cidade do Rock ("City of Rock"), an entertainment city rather than a simple concert ground. Beyond the stages you'll find a giant Ferris wheel, a zip line, themed streets, art installations, a vast gastronomy court, brand experiences, merchandising and dedicated VIP and hospitality areas. It's designed to be a full day and night out — arriving early to explore is part of the experience.
Where does Rock in Rio take place?
The festival is held at Cidade do Rock, inside the Parque Olímpico in Barra da Tijuca, on Rio's western side. Barra is modern and convenient, but sits well outside the classic Rio neighborhoods: expect roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car to Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon (traffic permitting), and a little less to São Conrado and Joá, which lie between Barra and the beach districts. This distance is worth planning for — and it's precisely why a private driver transforms the experience.
Where to stay during Rock in Rio 2026
Where you stay shapes your entire Rock in Rio. Here's how the prime options compare.
Luxury villas in Joá — for privacy and groups
Perched on green hillsides between São Conrado and Barra, Joá offers gated, staffed villas with pools and ocean views — close to the venue yet utterly private. Ideal for families or groups travelling together, with room for a chauffeur and concierge to operate seamlessly.
Luxury apartments in Ipanema — for the real Rio
Ipanema puts you steps from the beach, the city's best restaurants and its nightlife. A luxury apartment or penthouse here means you're in the heart of the action between festival days.
Luxury penthouses in Copacabana — for space and views
Copacabana's beachfront penthouses offer large terraces, sweeping ocean views and easy access to concerts and the city — a glamorous base with room to entertain.
Barra da Tijuca — for proximity
Barra is the closest district to Cidade do Rock, which cuts your commute — though it feels more modern and less "classic Rio" than the beach neighborhoods to the east.
How to get to Rock in Rio
- Official festival buses run from designated points across the city.
- Ride-hailing (Uber, 99) works, but surges heavily on festival nights, with long waits at closing time.
- A private driver or chauffeur is the most comfortable option — no queues, no surge, door to door on your schedule. It's also what makes staying in Ipanema or Joá effortless.
- Helicopter transfers to Barra are available for the ultimate arrival.
Latin Exclusive arranges private drivers and transfers for its guests throughout the festival.
Tips for international visitors
- Weather: September is early spring in Rio — warm days, cooler evenings and the occasional shower. Pack a light layer and a poncho.
- Payments: Cidade do Rock is largely cashless — bring a contactless card and a power bank for long days.
- Security: stick to well-trafficked areas, use trusted transport and keep valuables to a minimum at the festival.
- What to bring: comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, ID and patience for the crowds at peak hours.
